As Dashing Films prepares for the release of its web series Chess on Saturday, May 2nd, 2026, key members of the production team are offering insight into the work behind the scenes. Bright Nwang Effiong, who served as Director of Photography on the project, shares his experience shaping the visual identity of the series.

Bright explains that his role as Director of Photography went beyond operating the camera. According to him, his responsibility was to manage shot composition while ensuring that all departments aligned visually within each frame. This meant maintaining consistency in how the story is presented on screen and making sure that every visual decision supports the overall tone of the series.

The Vision: The title Chess itself influenced the visual approach — treating each frame as a deliberate move, using shot composition as a foundation to guide the storytelling and set the series apart from conventional web productions.

The Visual Vision Behind Chess

Speaking on the vision behind Chess, he notes that the title itself influenced how he approached the project visually. It gave him a different perspective in interpreting the story, pushing him to treat the series in a way that stands apart from conventional web productions. He adds that this approach started from a strong focus on shot composition, using it as a foundation to guide the storytelling visually.

Production Challenges

On the challenges faced during production, Bright highlights a number of practical difficulties. He points to weather conditions — particularly unexpected rainfall during exterior shoots — as a major disruption. He also mentions last-minute changes to scenes after setup, which required quick adjustments from the team. In addition, the demanding schedule of filming into the night for extended periods without proper breaks tested both endurance and focus. Despite these challenges, he describes the experience as a memorable and positive one.

What Sets Chess Apart

While reflecting on what sets Chess apart, Bright suggests that the series benefits from a deliberate visual approach driven by intention rather than routine execution. He implies that attention to detail in framing and composition contributes to a distinct viewing experience that audiences will notice from the very first episode.

Chess premieres Saturday, May 2nd, 2026 on the Dashing Films YouTube channel, with watch parties in Lagos, Anambra, and Imo State.
